WHAT is Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation?

DRG is a type of neuromodulation that is used to treat chronic pain in specific locations of the body, such as the foot, knee, or groin/pelvis. Like SCS, it works by using electricity to block pain signals before they can reach the brain.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROCEDURE

How does DRG Stimulation work?

Before moving forward with a permanent implant, every patient first undergoes a one-week trial period. During this trial, the device is placed temporarily so that patients can experience firsthand whether it effectively reduces their pain. This ensures that only those who respond well proceed to the next step. If the trial is successful, a permanent implant is offered.

In the permanent procedure, two thin wires—called leads—are carefully positioned near the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), which is a cluster of nerve cells located along the spine that plays a key role in transmitting pain signals. Using precise X-ray guidance, the leads are placed in the targeted area to maximize effectiveness. A small battery-powered generator is then implanted under the skin, typically in the lower back or buttock region, to provide ongoing stimulation. The gentle electrical pulses sent through the leads work by disrupting and modulating the pain messages before they can reach the spinal cord and brain. For many patients, this results in significant pain reduction, improved daily function, and a better quality of life.

MORE THAN A TREATMENT

A Step Toward Relief

CONDITIONS TREATED:

  • Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) stimulation is an advanced therapy designed to target chronic pain in highly specific regions of the body, including the foot, ankle, knee, hip, groin, or pelvis. By focusing precisely on the nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals, this treatment provides relief in areas that are often difficult to manage with other therapies.

  • Patients living with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or those who continue to experience pain even after surgery frequently find DRG stimulation to be life-changing, as it not only reduces discomfort but also helps restore mobility, function, and quality of life.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

  • Precise Pain Relief: DRG stimulation therapy allows for precise pain relief by targeting one specific area of pain for the patient.

  • Beneficial For Complex Conditions: This therapy is beneficial for complex conditions which are typically difficult to treat such as CRPS and pelvic pain.

  • Minimally Invasive: This procedure is minimally invasive and allows for a trial period for the patient to see if this therapy works for them prior to permanent implantation.

  • Improved Quality of Life: DRG allows for patients to have an improved quality of life due to successful pain relief allowing them to improve functionality and their mental health.

FAQS: Frequently asked questions

  • Although the risks are small, they include.

    1. Infection at the implantation site - we perform the procedure in a sterile environment to reduce risk.

    2. Bleeding.

    3. Lead Migration - most common in the first few weeks after the procedure, and sometimes requires revision.

    4. Pain at implantation site - soreness after implanting the device is common.

  • DRG targets specific nerve roots for a more focal pain relief whereas SCS stimulates the spinal cord for a more broad area of effect.

  • Patients often report very rapid improvements in pain after the device is turned on, with no uncomfortable buzzing or tingling sensations.

  • Most patients feel relief within days and often the relief improves overtime as the patient tailors the stimulation to their specific needs.
