WHAT IS A RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION (RFA)?

Radio frequency ablations are a treatment option for treating low back pain caused by osteoarthritis of the facet joints. These joints connect one vertebrae (spinal bone) to the next and like other joints can develop degenerative changes and arthritis. This procedure is done to treat pain from arthritis in the spine, which becomes more common as we age. The procedure is used to treat pain in the neck, mid, or low back.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROCEDURE

HOW DOES A RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION WORK?

During a Radiofrequency Ablation procedure, you'll be positioned comfortably on an examination table, and the area to be treated will be cleaned and sterilized. Local anesthetic may be used to numb the skin and underlying tissues to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Fluoroscopy (live X-ray) guidance will be employed to ensure precise needle placement.

This procedure involves using x-ray guidance to place a needle next to the facet. The tip of the needle is heated with radiofrequency energy, effectively disabling the nerve fibers. Numbing medication with or without steroids is often given to make the procedure more comfortable. This procedure is done after a successful series of diagnostic medial branch blocks described above.

The purpose of this procedure is to improve back and/or neck pain. You can expect to see improvements in your ability to stand, sit, twist, and bend. By impairing the nerves' ability to transmit pain signals, a RFA can provide lasting pain relief for several months to years.
