WHAT ARE TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS?

Trigger Point Injections (TPI) are a minimally invasive treatment option used to alleviate muscle pain and dysfunction caused by trigger points. Trigger points are localized areas of muscle tightness and tenderness that can develop as a result of injury, overuse, or stress. These trigger points can cause referred pain, muscle stiffness, and limited range of motion.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROCEDURE

HOW DO trigger point injections WORK?

During a Trigger Point Injection, your healthcare provider at Groth Pain & Spine will carefully locate the trigger points using palpation or ultrasound guidance. A small needle is then precisely inserted into the trigger point, and some local anesthetic is injected. This can relax the tight muscle fibers, alleviate pain, and improve blood flow to the affected area.

ARE TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS right for you?

More Than a treatment: A Step Toward Relief

CONDITIONS TREATED:

  • Myofascial pain syndrome: TPIs are commonly used to treat myofascial pain syndrome, a chronic pain disorder characterized by the presence of trigger points in muscle tissue.

  • Fibromyalgia: Individuals with fibromyalgia may experience relief from widespread muscle pain and tender points through trigger point injections.

  • Tension headaches: Trigger points in the neck and shoulder muscles can contribute to tension headaches, and TPIs may help alleviate associated pain and muscle tension.

  • Chronic neck and back pain: TPIs can target specific trigger points in the neck and back muscles, providing localized pain relief and improving mobility.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

  • Minimally Invasive: Trigger point injections are a minimally invasive, in-office procedure used to decrease muscular tightness and minimize painful muscle “knots”, also known as trigger points.

  • Muscle Tightness Relief: Trigger point injections involve carefully injecting a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, into painful areas of muscle to relieve tightness and pain associated with the muscle knot.

  • Safe: Trigger points are a safe, minimally invasive treatment for myofascial pain syndrome, cervical tension headaches, generalized pain due to fibromyalgia, or chronic neck and low back pain.

  • In-office Treatment: Other benefits include that these injections can be completed in the office with just cold spray to numb the skin.

FAQS: Frequently asked questions

  • Patients may experience pain relief immediately, benefitting from full results after 24-72 hours after the injection. TPI can also significantly improve range of motion.

  • Typically trigger points, better known as “knots”, are painful and sore when touched. There may be discomfort as the provider palpates for trigger points. Patients may feel slight discomfort as the needle is first inserted.

  • Mild soreness may occur at the injection site that could last up to two days. After the injection, patients typically return to normal activities, but should avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours.
